Description
Summary:The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award is entering its 20th year as the gold standard award for organizational excellence. Despite this dramatic and growing interest, misconceptions about Baldrige are common. The authors set out to discover why health care leaders have such an interest in an award originally launched in 1988 for manufacturing and service businesses. Their findings suggest some myths and surprising realities that explain why for the past three years, half of all Baldrige applicants are from hospitals or hospital systems. The myths and realities are: 1. Myth: Baldrige is intimidating and laborious. Reality: Baldrige provides discipline and focus. 2. Myth: Implementing Baldrige adds work; it's a big project. Reality: Baldrige is a road map to working smarter, not harder. 3. Myth: Baldrige is an award. Reality: Baldrige is a strategic diagnostic analysis of your leadership systems. All the organizations interviewed are continuing their journeys in various ways.
