Summary: | Blacks, Latinos, and Native Americans have the worst health status of all Americans, yet they receive the fewest health care services and the least education and funding. The current health care system fails to properly address the needs of these groups. Whether reform measures will alleviate the health crisis they face will depend primarily on whether lawmakers and policymakers understand the reasons that account for the disparities, including: 1. poverty, 2. scarcity of health care professionals in rural communities, 3. small businesses' general failure to offer health care coverage, and 4. insufficient diversity among providers. Reform should: 1. stress health education, 2. promote higher education among minority students, 3. use paraprofessionals, and 4. develop a monitoring system. |
