Summary: | W. J. Haynes Co., a health, welfare, and pension fund administration firm, picked one of the worst winter weekends in Chicago's history as the moving date for its data processing (DP) building. The data processing department and its equipment had to be moved to a new headquarters about 4 miles away from the current site. Memorex, International Business Machines, and Decision Data equipment all had to be moved. In addition to the physical problems created by a major snow storm, equipment vendor representatives and the telephone company experienced storm-related difficulties in reaching testing numbers. Configuration problems with the mainframe also had to be solved in the process of the move. Within 4 days, the DP operation was up and running again, but the move of the rest of the company was delayed by the mammoth snowfall. Thus, for the next month, the DP department had to shuttle data between old and new headquarters. |
