Summary: | The exact definition of the database machine has not been determined, and the answer is not likely to come strictly through technology. Rather, the marketplace will decide the future of database machines. The contenders that prove the most popular and the most cost-effective will determine the final definition. The marketplace for database machines comprises 3 separate and distinct areas. International Business Machines (IBM) leads in the mainframe market, but significant developments have not been made in specialized database machine hardware. The other 2 marketplaces are the mini/maxi marketplace and the emerging automated office marketplace. In each of these marketplaces, separate perspectives on the database machine issue arise. Even lacking basic agreement over the meaning of ''database machine,'' the industry is increasingly interested in the concept and in its development. |
