Summary: | A recent survey of 12 states shows that many voting systems remain in disarray and that numerous states are still struggling to update antiquated IT systems, some of which were blamed for the voting fiasco in Florida. Each state has control over its own voter registration systems, and only 10 states provide real-time, online access to any centralized voter site while 16 have no statewide database at all. A big problem is that many jurisdictions cannot afford to upgrade. Wisconsin has no centralized registry and lets voters register on Election Day, possibly exposing itself to fraud. Florida's 67 counties are not connected to its central repository and cannot receive updates in real time. Some election supervisors opposed the idea, and the state opted for a cheaper but possibly less effective central voter file. There are challenges facing even states such as Texas that have available real-time online systems. |
