Summary: | Next month marks the 200th anniversary of George Washington's death, and Washington is memorialized all over the world by a famous statue first crafted by Frenchman Jean-Antoine Houdon. However, Houdon might never have sailed to America to sculpt Washington had not some equally famous Americans moonlighted as life insurance brokers. Shortly after signing an agreement with Thomas Jefferson to do the sculpture, Houdon became ill. So serious was this occurrence that the artist insisted upon being insured for the benefit of his family before he would embark on the journey across the Atlantic to measure Washington in person. This was probably America's first business life insurance transaction. |
