Description
Summary:On Jan. 12, less than a month after B.A.T. Industries paid $1 billion for American Tobacco Inc., the British conglomerate shut down American's Stamford headquarters, and axed the jobs of 100 employees. The Jan. 11 mass firing came on the heels of an earlier round of cuts. A spokesman said American Tobacco's top executives in Stamford were replaced by B.A.T. managers almost immediately after American was sold to B.A.T. by American Brands Inc. of Old Greenwich. The estimated 100 people who lost their jobs consisted of middle managers and support staffers. (excerpt)
