Summary: | Marketing ethics is best taught in marketing management courses that ask students to examine their beliefs and develop a consistent philosophy of life that can be applied to their careers. This statement of beliefs should be reflected in the student's work throughout the course. If a contradiction is apparent between the stated belief and later statements in class work, such inconsistencies should be brought to the attention of the student and then corrected. A less effective approach to teaching marketing ethics is found in courses that provide students with a framework in which to discuss and categorize unethical practices. These and other alternatives overlook the fact that ethical behavior in the marketplace is a function of the individual's philosophy of life and values. The best way to teach ethics is to develop within the student a comprehensive system of values that can be carried into the marketplace. |
