description | In 1990, NASA launched a program aimed at developing an expert system for designing seals. To date, NASA can offer an integrated expert system that combines codes to design 3 seal types with an extensive material database, all directed by a knowledge-based package that guides users through the design and analysis process. When completed in 1997, the expert system will let new generations of engineers design seals with the efficiency of experienced mechanical designers. Developing a knowledge-based system for seal design and analysis involves 3 major activities: 1. developing the knowledge-based system shell, 2. generating analytical models and codes for different seal types, and 3. integrating the various seals and analysis modules into the knowledge-based system. US industry received the first 3 seal codes for evaluation in August 1992. The codes are for spiral-groove gas seals, gas cylindrical seals, and incompressible cylindrical seals. CFD Research Corp. is fine-tuning their 3-dimensional computational fluid dynamic code to analyze fluid flow and evaluate dynamic forces on cylindrical seals. |
