Summary: | Initial deployment of optical add/drop multiplexers has been focused on telecom inter-exchange (long haul) networks, mainly in North America. Yet with the opening of communication markets to competition, there are increasing economic incentives to bypass local exchange carriers' and national telephone companies' central offices and provide services directly to major subscribers. As a result, the OADM has been particularly attractive to newer carriers, such as Hyperion in the US, the subscriber-to-subscriber outreach of AT&T, as well as the European and Asian extensions of MCI WorldCom, as they bypass local exchanges. This evolution of OADM will track the expansion of dense wavelength division multiplexing system. |
