Description
Summary:Advances in computer technology, information processing, and modern telecommunications have opened up a wide range of possibilities for new applications and services stretching into the broadband domain. There will be an increased emphasis on video communication, and fast data communications will allow remote access to high-performance computers for computer-aided design and manufacturing applications. Asynchronous transfer mode (ATM), a new transmission and switching principle, offers the flexibility necessary to be easily adapted to unforeseen changes in future requirements. It was recommended by CCITT as the target solution for the broadband integrated services digital network (ISDN). Information transmitted through an ATM network is transported and routed in fixed-length packets called cells.
