Description
Summary:Porous ceramics are widely used in many high-tech areas such as filtration, fuel cells, cleaning of hot gases and cosmetics. The pore structure characteristics govern their performance. Several characterisation techniques are currently available. They include: flow porometry, extrusion porosimetry, intrusion porosimetry and gas adsorption. Each of these techniques is briefly described. The different kinds of pores present in ceramics (through-pores; blind pores; closed pores) are explained, and the techniques which can be used to characterise them are noted. It is shown that no single technique is capable of determining all pore structure characteristics. 2 refs.
