Summary: | Volume-stable MgO-Al2O3-carbon (MAC) and Al2O3-MgO-carbon (AMC) batches with high refractory quality can be successfully used in steelmaking, i.e., the slagline and bottom-impact zones of steel ladles. An attempt was made to develop AMC and MAC refractories with good volume stability and improved refractory properties. Dead-burned magnesite, calcined bauxite, flake graphite and Al metal powder were used as raw materials. Two composition series, each of which contained six batches were prepared. The graphite content in both series was fixed at 10 wt%. The phase composition, sintering parameters and properties (bulk density; mechanical strength), volume stability in terms of linear change, microstructure, and refractory properties (refractoriness-under-load; permanent linear change at various firing cycles) were determined. It was found that a limited amount of MgO-Al2O3 spinel phase improved the properties of the AMC and MAC refractories and had no negative effect on their strength. |
