Description
Summary:Glass-ceramic materials are polycrystalline solids that contain a residual vitreous phase. They are prepared by fusion and controlled crystallization of a glass. The process of preparation of glass-ceramic materials consists of the selection and mixture of raw materials, fusion, cooling and heat treatment to cause nucleation and crystallization. Research has been conducted on the application of the glass-ceramic process as an alternative to storage of industrial waste. Accumulated experience in this field has allowed the use of waste generated from electric power stations and mines as well as volcanic ash and galvanic sludge. Important attempts have been made worldwide during the past few years to promote interest in the use of traditional glass-ceramic process techniques for recycling other types of inorganic composition residues.
