Summary:Clear recommendations to support the mental health and wellbeing of staff have been made in relation to social work in reports such as the Lord Laming inquiry, which stated that "supervision is the cornerstone of good social work practice and should be seen to operate effectively at all levels of the organisation" (bit.ly/LamingInquiry). The supervision sessions provide an opportunity to further discuss training and offer a safe place for staff to talk openly about the feelings young people leave them with. Other benefits of supervision include increased confidence, opportunity for peer support/feedback, reduced staff turnover, improved staff resilience, improved understanding of children's needs and the development of a learning culture within the organisation.
