Summary:Professions have long had a special status in the nature of their activities and in the laws and rules that should be applied to them. Economic pressures might be seen as challenging that status. Membership in a professional body no longer guarantees secure employment. Moreover, the forces of competition on professional firms are fiercer than ever and are challenging some of the fundamental assumptions about professional behavior. These forces raise new questions about the application of competition and consumer protection policies to professions. Some of these policies as they apply to professions in general, and to the surveying profession in particular, are in need of review.
