Summary:Foreign direct investment decreased to $70.8 billion in the US in 1997 from $79.9 billion in 1996. In spite of this decrease, 1997 was among the highest recorded outlays of foreign direct investment in the US since the new investment period began in 1980. The 11% decrease for 1997 in foreign direct investment followed a 40% increase in 1996 and a 25% increase in 1995.
