Summary: | The purpose of this paper is to focus on the representation of managers who have carried out downsizing plans and to confront them with the prevailing managerial ideologies relating to the reduction in workforce. After having put these ideologies back in their analytical context, the present article deals with the views expressed by 38 managers who have implemented downsizing plans, focusing on 3 types of representations: shareholder's interest, employee's self-reliance and market competition. It aims at pinpointing the link between the attention given to shareholders' satisfaction and the structure of the social capital and the decline of the obligation of job stability in favor of an intensification of competition. |
