Summary: | The cold, snow-filled winter of 2000-2001 did not deter Reliant Energy from meeting a June 1 deadline to have its 950 MW powerplant operational in Aurora, Illinois. The single-fuel, natural gas-fired simple cycle facility is located approximately 35 miles from downtown Chicago. The peaking plant will ultimately contain 10 GE gas turbine-generator sets. Currently, 6 GE LM6000 aeroderivative and three GE 7FA gas turbine-generator sets are in service. The 10th unit-another 7FA gas turbine-will be operational as planned by spring 2002. The quick response by Reliant Energy and other wholesale generators in building new peaking power plants in Illinois helped the state meet its electrical needs. |
