Summary: | The HomePlug Powerline Alliance is trying to get out the message that every room in a home already has three or four network ports. Since announcing the first release of their ac-line networking specification in June, member companies, such as Netgear and Phonex, have been busy building products that allow the use of ac-power lines in the home not only to power networked PCs but also to interconnect them. The idea of using a home's ac-power lines to exchange data between computers has been around for a while. The difference this time is that technology has caught up to the task. HomePlug is promising data rates as fast as 14 Mbps over a home's power lines. Moore's Law, faster silicon, and sophisticated algorithms are allowing engineers to overcome the technical obstacles that plagued earlier efforts. |
