Summary: | The CD-ROM version of Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Edition Dictionary includes all of the material in the classic print version, as well as enhancements due to the capabilities of CD-ROM technology. These include: 1. sound pronunciation of words, 2. searching by alphabetical, find word, random, and title-topic methods, and 3. the ability to copy definitions and illustrations and paste into other applications via the clipboard. The minimal hardware requirements are a Mac Plus with 1Mb of RAM, a hard disk, and a Macintosh-compatible CD-ROM drive. More than 1Mb of RAM is needed for operating the dictionary with Multifinder. The standalone nature of the product is disappointing since it cannot be seamlessly integrated or linked with other workstation software. It cannot be used as a desk accessory and has no links to spell checkers or thesauri. Also, the absence of online help and user feedback via highlighting and the awkward nature of windowing leaves significant gaps in the interface. |
