Summary:Despite the dramatic improvement in Thai banking-sector non-performing loans (NPLs) suggested by recent official data, Thai banks remain fragile and undercapitalized. NPLs are said to have dropped by more than 50% to 18% of gross loans at December 2000, from 39% a year earlier. While the worst of the Asian financial crisis has passed, Thai banks continue to face severe challenges, including maintaining prudent levels of loan loss provisioning.
