Summary: | A unique research partnership between the US textile industry and 10 Department of Energy laboratories is aimed at transforming a troubled industry long regarded as the epitome of antiquated production methods into a showcase of advanced technology. The project includes a wide variety of initiatives such as the development of an electronic marketplace, pollution prevention activities and environmental resource conservation. Individual projects range from developing inexpensive sensors that help sewing machine operators make seams (thus reducing waste) to identifying genes in cotton that relate to agronomic traits like strength, fiber uniformity, and drought and insect resistance. |
