Summary: | All too often in the housing industry, discussions of green and/or sustainable practices are relegated to building and residential development, occasionally to landscape and water usage and sometimes to transportation patterns in new construction. In this first of a two-part series, the author discusses the Yolo County Housing's (YCH) search for financial stability through a new working model that incorporates this principle. In 2006 and early 2007, the YCH was desperately trying to maintain positive cash flow and deliver basic service. It closed its 2006-2007 budget with a deficit and, in order to balance its 2007-2008 budget, needed to cut its operations budget by approximately 20%. In 2008, the YCH Board adopted a Climate Change Resolution and has pledged the agency to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This vision has been a driving force behind its greening initiatives. |
