Summary:If 2005 was the year when the market returned, 2006 was the year operating leasing dominated. Awas, GATX Air and Singapore Aircraft Leasing Enterprise were all sold. AirCastle, AerCap and Genesis successfully floated. AirCastle, AerCap and Genesis all approached the same problem - finding long term financing for long term assets - in a very different way. They have all looked at past solutions like IPOs, securitizations and single owners - and created new structures. It will be fascinating seeing how they fare in tougher markets - and as they are public companies there will be lots of data. It was another good year for airlines. Air China and Air India mandated some of the biggest deals ever seen and United Airlines closed the largest ever debtor-in-possession financing (which was extremely unlucky not to pick up an award)But the winning deals were not just about size. Airfinance Journal recognizes the most significant deals of the year and winners all combine innovation, structuring skill and great execution. Overall deal of the year was the Genesis IPO and securitization.
