Summary: | In case the Philippines is downgraded to a "priority foreign country" in the watch list, the worst category of intellectual property violators, its benefits under the generalized system of preferences, a preferential trade access scheme, can be suspended. The scheme allows the country to export certain products to the US at preferential tariff rates. The office said the amount, which has surpassed the P900 million worth of items seized for whole of 2004, is expected to rise further as the IP teams continue to sustain their anti-piracy drive not only in Metro Manila but also in provinces and key cities. The Customs bureau seized more than 60,000 pieces of fake products valued at P385.22 million. The seized items were books, toys, exercise equipment, glassware, footwear, clothes, fashion accessories, surgical instruments, cosmetic products, toiletries, school supplies, DVDs, VCDs and blank tapes. |
