Summary:I had taken my Belgian friend Bernard to the old walled city without knowing what exactly to expect, and having just a kutsero (coachman) for a tour guide, we had to content ourselves with the sight of Intramuros' old structures without the benefit of any scholarly explanations. I knew that Intramuros, which lies along the southern bank of the Pasig River, is the oldest district of the city of Manila. I also knew that during the Spanish period, Intramuros, whose name literally means "within the walls," was considered Manila itself. From the San Andres fortress - built in 1603 to protect the Real Gate on its right and reinforce the south-eastern part of Intramuros - our guide led us to General Luna St. towards the San Agustin Church, the oldest church in the Philippines and the only building left intact after the destruction of Intramuros in 1945 during World War II.
