Summary: | In a statement, OTS chief Cecilio R. Penilla said the Transportation and Communication Secretary Leandro R. Mendoza has ordered the Philippine Coast Guard, Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) and the Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) to assist the OTS in implementing the ISPS Code. Because of this, Mr. [Cesar A. V. Purisima] said the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) will keep a "tight watch" on the progress of Philippine ports in complying with ISPS regulations, despite the fact that the OTS is the "designated authority." The ISPS Code, adopted by the IMO in December 2002, prescribes new security systems, arrangements and procedures to be adopted on board ships and in ports to make sure that passengers and cargoes passing through ports are "clean." |
