Description
Summary:Intellectual Property Office (IPO) Director-General Adrian S. Cristobal, Jr. however, told reporters yesterday he remains confident that the Philippines will be removed from the USTR's special watch list. Mr. Cristobal said he based his confidence on his meeting with David Katz, of the USTR's director of Southeast Asia and the Pacific unit, last Monday. The Supreme Court, however, recently decided to defer the creation of specialized IP courts purportedly due to the lack of significant volume of IP cases. Establishment of the IP courts is expected to boost compliance with IP laws. He said the Philippines made significant progress in intellectual property protection by implementing the optical media law but noted that a wide range of counterfeit goods still proliferate the market. Mr. [Robert P. Ludan] said US officials are hoping the Philippines further steps up its fight.
