Description
Summary:The value for the transaction has not yet been revealed. Ford bought Land Rover from BMW in 2000 as well as the right to acquire the brand name or trademark "ROVER." Prior to this transaction, business papers had speculated about a possible sale of the brand name or trademark "ROVER" to China's Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation for just over L11.0 million (16 million euros, $21 million). A trademark can be deceptive, generic, descriptive and even confusingly similar to a prior registered trademark, and these factors will weaken the value of the trademark. For example, the trademark "Apple" will be valued higher if sold to a manufacturer of computers as compared with a trader of the apple fruits, which will make it descriptive. The ownership of a particular trademark is also another relevant factor to consider in its valuation. For example, the trademark "Kapeng Batangas" - which is a blend of the barako coffee beans harvested in the province of Batangas - if sold to a foreign company, will diminish its value. The reason for this is that the change of ownership or nationality will surely affect the perception of consumers that the coffee beans used are no longer the barako coffee beans from the province of Batangas.
