Summary: | Meltzer and Hamann discuss how middle level and high school principals face a conundrum--there are larger numbers of English language learners (ELL) enrolling in their schools than ever before, and ready or not, principals and their teachers are responsible for these students' learning and academic literacy development. A recent study found that 1.3 million teachers have at least one ELL enrolled in their classes. Add to this school leaders' increasing realization that all teachers must play a role in bringing students' content-area reading, writing and thinking skills--in English--up to speed, whether they are monolingual, bilingual, or trilingual speakers. |
