Summary:In yet another step to prevent a repeat of the Great Blackout of 2003, New York's Long Island Power Authority is installing a 660-MW $300-million submarine electric transmission cable to link electricity consumers on Long Island with the PJM (Pennsylvania-Jersey-Maryland) Interconnection for the first time. The project also is part of the utility's plan to add 1,250 MW to its grid by 2010. The cable will stretch from First Energy Inc.'s converter station in Sayreville, NJ, to Uniondale, NY-based LIPA's Newbridge Road substation in Levittown.
