Summary:For more than 6 years, pilot and large-scale composting experiments have been done at the University of Vicosa, Brazil. It focused on low-cost technologies, forced aeration techniques, vector and leachate control, process monitoring, staff training, and technical assistance to farms and city councils. The basic strategy has focused on building support and communications with 4 target groups: 1. local community, 2. federal government and institutions, 3. local council and authorities, and 4. local associations and nongovernmental organizations.
