Description
Summary:In response to EPA questions of the risks of biosolids composting, the National Research Council (NRC) reported on the standards of biosolids application to land, with attention to the human health risks of Class A and B sludges, and compliance with biosolids regulations. The NRC determined that, while regulations appear to protect public health, further research is required to address the risks from exposure to biosolids. In order to address the complications of doing research in this field, the Water Environment Research Foundation (WERF) convened a summit meeting in 2003 (Alexandria, VA). Establishing trust among stakeholders was a key issue in developing the summit agenda. Other goals included providing an open information exchange, prioritizing research, developing research principles, and developing a policy addressing research freedoms. The top ten research projects are identified.
