Description
Summary:This paper provides a case for restoring the humanities and particularly Classics to the grammar and high school curriculum. Surveying the history of Classics and how it was taught in American schools, they make a powerful and convincing argument that Greek and Latin philosophy, history, and literature provide the intellectual and political infrastructure of Western civilization upon which all disciplines rely. They also provide specific recommendations of curricula that can restore Classics to the rightful place in education that it has occupied for millennia, and especially its influence on the American political order and the duties of citizenship. Anyone concerned about the state of education and our historically and culturally challenged students today should read this timely and thoughtful white paper.
