Description
Summary:Chapter 1 lays out the evidence, both literary and documentary, for the presence of children in and around monastic communities and catalogs the different ways in which monks and children might come into contact. In Part 2, "Representation," Schroeder turns to the representation of children in monastic literature and art. Drawing on both biblical tradition and classical, especially Stoic, philosophical theories of emotion, each of these authors problematized the expression of familial bonds of affection by monks, while at the same time asserting their own "paternal authority" over subordinates in the monastic hierarchy.
