Summary: | Urban runoff, or stormwater, can worsen flooding. The Nature Conservancy has developed a program called Brightstorm to address this issue by implementing emerging technologies for hydrologic restoration in urban watersheds. The program's initial projects in Maryland aimed to improve water quality in the Chesapeake Bay. Brightstorm collaborated with Walmart to retrofit stormwater retention ponds with "smart pond" technology, which allows for longer water retention and improves water quality. Cloud-based technology is used to continuously monitor and control stormwater infrastructure, reducing flood risk and restoring natural hydrology. |
