Summary: | With decreasing budgets and increasing competition, attracting and retaining students has become a primary goal for many universities. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the use of online career advising. Prior to discussing this topic it would be helpful to distinguish between career advising, career services, career counseling, and career development. Over time the lines between the various forms of career assistance have become blurred. Career practitioners often use the terms career advising, counseling, services, and development synonymously, when in fact they are distinct. Advances in technology have changed the way career advising is conducted. The Internet represents a prime example, overcoming geographical barriers, providing instant access to information, and saving advisors and advisees valuable time. Unfortunately, career advising often becomes an exercise in logistics, where the goal is to provide the best advising possible, to the greatest number of students. |
