Description
Summary:Innovation is a driver of the competitiveness and success of firms operating in a constantly evolving environment. In practice, however, the process leading to the introduction of a new idea is a delicate one that faces numerous constraints imposed by the past decisions and successes of the firm. As such, its practices, its sources, its history and its skills portfolio can all constitute obstacles to be overcome. One only has to think of the many organizations in traditional sectors that are characterized by strong, distinctive and deeply rooted values. How can these organizations innovate and modernize while remaining true to their traditional roots? In this article, we explore this question based on the difficulties with product innovation in the wine industry in Bordeaux. After a brief overview of the context, we show that the strategic errors observed in this industry are not only the result of the strength of tradition and past success, but can also be tied to four types of obstacles linked to consumers, producers, distributors and the Bordeaux appellation d'origine controlée. The aim of these findings is to inspire managers facing the challenge of innovating in structures where the weight of history and culture is extremely high. We offer a number of general recommendations aimed at helping them overcome these challenges. [PUB ABSTRACT]
