Summary:Sulfate is known to exert strong masking effects on carbohydrate residues. Herein, lectin histochemistry revealed that desulfation of the adhesive proteoglycans found on the surface of marine sponge Microciona prolifera enhanced lectin staining by promoting the binding of sulfate termini to sulfate-binding lectins. The enhanced binding indicated positive affinities of lectins for specific sugars.
