Summary:Physicians do not wish to become politicians but should insist that the world of politics becomes aware of its medical responsibility. Prevention alone can preserve present and future generations from extinction. A first step is a ban on nuclear tests, which Albert Schweitzer called for in 1958. Physicians can be disseminators of psychological disarmament-a redirecting of human thinking, which Schweitzer described as 'respect for life'.
