Summary: | Characterization of the response of activated sludge systems to environmental change presents complex problems because of the many types of shock and the manner in which they can be administered. Present interest centers on biomass response and a study was designed for comparison of once-through and cell recycle systems at constant hydraulic retention times and at varying levels of growth rate and cell residence time. The results of the study delineate the roles of these parameters and establish some guidelines regarding the shock levels that activated sludge systems can handle without significant disruption of treatment activity. |
