description | High concentrations of DDT residues from industrial wastes have been measured in municipal wastewater effluent, ocean bottom sediments, crabs, and flatfish of the Palos Verdes shelf off Los Angeles, Calif. Almost 22 metric tons of total DDT were discharged via the submarine outfalls of this region during 1971. A detailed survey conducted during 1972 revealed that approximately 200 metric tons of this contaminant were contained in the sediments of the shelf, and no significant change in surface concentrations between 1971 and 1973 was observed. Benthic crabs and flatfish from the discharge region contained 100 times as much total DDT as did control specimens. Concentrations in flatfish muscle were approximately twice the federal limit for seafood (5 mg/l), and no significant change in these levels was detected between 1971 and 1974. |
