Summary: | Dear Editor : I read with great interest a case report entitled "Anomalous Origin of the Right Vertebral Artery from the Right Common Carotid Artery" by Iwashita et al. recently published in Journal of Neuroendovascular Therapy and would like to comment on the same. In this article, the authors reported a rare case of anomalous origin of the right vertebral artery (RVA) and explained its embryological basis. There are several similar case reports describing the origin of the RVA from the common carotid artery (CCA) in the literature. However, knowledge of the normal anatomy and its embryology is fundamental to understand the mechanisms of VA origin anomalies. The VA is an extradural paramedian longitudinal arterial axis formed by segmental arteries (SAs) from the dorsal aorta. Embryologically, the subclavian arteries and VAs are formed by the development and degeneration or regression of the seven cervical SAs arising from the dorsal aorta. The 1st to 6th SAs regress at the 14- to 17-mm stage, whereas only the 7th SA persists and develops into subclavian arteries, from which the VA originates. |
