Summary:4-Amino-5-hexynoic acid, a suicide inactivator of the mammalian pyridoxal phosphate-dependent 4-aminobutyric acid:2-oxoglutaric acid aminotransferase, inhibits phytochrome and chlorophyll synthesis in developing oat ( Avena sativa L.), corn ( Zea mays L.), pea ( Pisum sativum L.), and cucumber ( Cucumis sativus L.) seedlings. In Avena and Cucumis seedlings, respectively, inhibition of phytochrome and chlorophyll accumulation by 4-amino-5-hexynoic acid can be significantly reversed by application of 5-aminolevulinic acid. These results indicate that 4-amino-5-hexynoic acid inhibits the synthesis of 5-aminolevulinic acid in plants.
