Summary: | The cost of drugs to treat diabetes in the United States is high. In this study, we looked at data from a large survey in the United States to see how much people pay for diabetes medications and insulin. We also looked at how many people spent a significant portion of their family income to make these purchases.
Many patients face financial barriers to accessing antidiabetic medications, especially those without insurance or with high deductibles and copayments. This can lead to poor adherence, suboptimal glycemic control, and increased risk of complications and mortality. This study provides insight into the economic burden of these treatments. The implications for managed care pharmacy are important, as pharmacists play a key role in optimizing medication therapy, educating patients, promoting adherence, and reducing costs for antidiabetic medications. |
