An Analysis of the Determinants of the Health-Related Quality of Life in Asian Patients With Cluster Headaches During Cluster Periods Using the Time Trade-Off Method

Patients with cluster headache (CH) exhibit impaired health-related quality of life (HRQoL). However, there have been few studies related to the HRQoL of patients with CH from Asian backgrounds. This study aimed to determine the impact of CH on HRQoL and to identify the factors affecting HRQoL in pa...

However, there have been few studies related to the HRQoL of patients with CH from Asian backgrounds. This study aimed to determine the impact of CH on HRQoL and to identify the factors affecting HRQoL in patients with CH during cluster periods. This prospective study enrolled patients with CH from 17 headache clinics in South Korea between September 2016 and February 2021. The study aimed to determine HRQoL in patients with CH using the EuroQol 5 Dimensions (EQ-5D) index and the time trade-off (TTO) method. Age- and sex-matched headache-free participants were recruited as a control group. The study included 423 patients with CH who experienced a cluster period at the time. EQ-5D scores were lower in patients with CH (0.88±0.43, mean±standard deviation) than in the controls (0.99±0.33,

The TTO method indicated that 58 (13.6%) patients with CH exhibited moderate-to-severe HRQoL deterioration. The HRQoL states in patients with CH were associated with current smoking patterns, headache severity, frequency, and duration, and scores on the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item scale (GAD-7), Patient Health Questionnaire 9-item scale (PHQ-9), 6-item Headache Impact Test, and 12-item Allodynia Symptom Checklist. Multivariable logistic regression analyses demonstrated that the HRQoL states in patients with CH were negatively correlated with the daily frequency of headaches, cluster period duration, and GAD-7 and PHQ-9 scores. Patients with CH experienced a worse quality of life during cluster periods compared with the headache-free controls, but the degree of HRQoL deterioration varied among them. The daily frequency of headaches, cluster period duration, anxiety, and depression were factors associated with HRQoL deterioration severity in patients with CH.</description><identifier>ISSN: 1738-6586</identifier><identifier>EISSN: 2005-5013</identifier><identifier>DOI: 10.3988/jcn.2022.0396</identifier><identifier>PMID: 38179636</identifier><language>eng</language><publisher>Korea (South): Korean Neurological Association</publisher><subject>Original</subject><ispartof>Journal of clinical neurology (Seoul, Korea), 2024-01, Vol.20 (1), p.86-93</ispartof><rights>Copyright © 2024 Korean Neurological Association.</rights><rights>Copyright © 2024 Korean Neurological Association 2024 Korean Neurological Association</rights><lds50>peer_reviewed</lds50><oa>free_for_read</oa><woscitedreferencessubscribed>false</woscitedreferencessubscribed><cites>FETCH-LOGICAL-c344t-d649607c029b0673e7c64c1f67e3a495a773929b3c7c1935e04ca738970979453</cites><orcidid>0000-0003-4570-3538 ; 0000-0002-4053-3763 ; 0000-0003-4014-9400 ; 0000-0003-0994-8503 ; 0000-0002-0049-558X ; 0000-0003-1364-1969 ; 0000-0003-1053-4682 ; 0000-0003-2656-9222 ; 0000-0001-5360-2951 ; 0000-0002-9937-762X ; 0000-0001-6221-1346 ; 0000-0002-6847-497X ; 0000-0002-7304-0308 ; 0000-0002-8726-4812</orcidid></display><links><openurl>$$Topenurl_article</openurl><openurlfulltext>$$Topenurlfull_article</openurlfulltext><thumbnail>$$Tsyndetics_thumb_exl</thumbnail><linktopdf>$$Uhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10782081/pdf/$$EPDF$$P50$$Gpubmedcentral$$Hfree_for_read</linktopdf><linktohtml>$$Uhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10782081/$$EHTML$$P50$$Gpubmedcentral$$Hfree_for_read</linktohtml><link.rule.ids>230,314,727,780,784,885,4024,27923,27924,27925,53791,53793</link.rule.ids><backlink>$$Uhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/38179636$$D View this record in MEDLINE/PubMed$$Hfree_for_read</backlink></links><search><creatorcontrib>Kim, Soo-Kyoung</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Chu, Min Kyung</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Kim, Byung-Kun</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Chung, Pil-Wook</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Moon, Heui-Soo</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Lee, Mi Ji</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Choi, Yun-Ju</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Park, Jeong Wook</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Kim, Byung-Su</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Song, Tae-Jin</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Oh, Kyungmi</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Ahn, Jin-Young</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Sohn, Jong-Hee</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Lee, Kwang-Soo</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Park, Kwang-Yeol</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Chung, Jae Myun</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Chung, Chin-Sang</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Cho, Soo-Jin</creatorcontrib><title>An Analysis of the Determinants of the Health-Related Quality of Life in Asian Patients With Cluster Headaches During Cluster Periods Using the Time Trade-Off Method</title><title>Journal of clinical neurology (Seoul, Korea)</title><addtitle>J Clin Neurol</addtitle><description>Patients with cluster headache (CH) exhibit impaired health-related quality of life (HRQoL).
