Summary:The high incidence of tuberculosis amongst persons who are constantly exposed to tobacco dust - such as those involved in "Beedi rolling" a cottage industry in several parts of India - led the authors to investigate whether tobacco dust in a congested atmosphere enhances the chance of infection by M. tuberculosis . The effect of aqueous extract of tobacco and pure nicotine on the growth of M. tuberculosis was studied.
