Summary: | In recent yrs, over most of the US, about 1 in 1000 marriages has been between first cousins. A cent ago the f was about 1 in 200, with f's as high as 3 or 4% in such areas as Ru N. Carolina. Recent reports from other countries range from 2 per 1,000 in part of Ireland to 13% among the Indian Parsees. Though Mormons, like many religious groups, favor endogamous marriage, in-breeding is not signif among them. In an investigation of 198 marriages between persons with a common surname, only 2 were possibly between first cousins. (AEQ). |
