Description
Summary:The link between infection and systemic vasculitis comes from the prevalence of hepatitis B surface antigens and antihepatitis B virus antibodies in polyarteritis nodosa and hepatitis C infections and mixed cryoglobulinaemia related vasculitis. 32 34 35 Neuropathies also occur in Lyme disease and HIV infections; among the reported mechanisms is a vasculitis. 36 37 The appearance of a CD8 T cell mediated vasculitis in patients with HIV with low peripheral blood CD4 T cell counts is striking. Endothelial cells as well as T lymphocytes and macrophages release soluble forms of adhesion molecules on cytokine stimulation; they are considered a consequence of endothelial cell activation in response to inflammatory stimuli.
